The Story of a Failed Mother

Let me set the scene: So there I was with my wife and a couple friends. We were enjoying ourselves at our local watering hole listening to bad renditions of "Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow and having a couple Captain and Cokes on a Saturday night.

Enter stage left: in walks a sixteen year old-ish girl and what could be assumed to be her boyfriend, and sits down at the table next to us. Some back story on this neighboring table: There were 4 or 5 30-somethings, who must have been out to prove they are still young. They had been extremely loud all night, and somewhat obnoxious, even almost getting kicked out after dancing on the table tops, and stripping down to their underwear during Right Said Fred's one hit wonder "Too Sexy". But who am I to judge someone having a good time? Plus it was pretty entertaining to see security pull them down off the table.

Anyways, so young girl walks in, and the people at our table all notice her, as she is obviously too young to be in a bar. We all initially thought she came to see her big sister and attempt to be served. We were all surprised when once she got to the table she looked at one of the 30-somethings and said "MOM Come on!" Security also noticed her and came over and asked for her ID. She then told security "I'm not old enough, I'm picking up my mom."

Sigh...what a good role model this girl has for a mother. Apparently "Mom" wasn't ready to go, as she ordered a round of slippery nipple shots for her entire group of friends. While waiting for the shots, Mom proudly showed her daughter the pictures of the night on her digital camera. The young girl was obviously not impressed and simply rolled her eyes.

After a few more minutes, a few more swigs of beer, and a few more expletives being thrown about, the girl and her boyfriend finally drug the mother out of the bar.

Whew, glad that was over...

Cue: Achy Breaky Heart begins playing on the karaoke machine....

Enter Stage Right: The mother comes running back in the door and wraps one of her friends in a giant bear hug. "I LOOOOOOOVE YOU!!!!" she shouts. Takes a few more swigs of beer, and begins wrestling with one of the men in her group of friends. Her friends ask where her daughter was. "In the car" she replies. The woman stays for a few more minutes, then finally leaves around 1:40am.

Stage lights dim.

Curtain falls.

Narrator: Now the scene we just witnessed is a true story. Think to yourself, what kind of message is this young girl getting by seeing her mother behave in such a way that most parents would not want their CHILDREN to behave in. Now nobody is perfect, and at one point or another we have maybe all had a few too many to drink, but to do so in front of your child at such an influential part of their lives is down right irresponsible. Also note, this 16year old girl was out driving around with her boyfriend at 1:40am. Where are the parents at?

My money says this poor girls chances of getting pregnant at an early age, using drugs, drinking alcohol underage, and burdening society with her mistakes is somewhat likely. I hope not. Bravo 30-something year old mother for doing everything you can to set your daughter up for success. You sure are a winner.
